Kazan Federal University

        Among all leading universities in the world one of the most important criteria of the scientific activitiy is Citation Index. To publish papers in internstional scientific journals that are included in Web of Science and Scopus Indexes, one should possess not only good language skills (no less than B2), but also an academic writing competence. Three Moscow Universities as well as Samara State Aerospace University broke the ground by opening academic consultancy centers where the main activity is to provide consultations on writing and publishing scientific papers abroad.
Samara Academic Consultancy Center (SACC) that is based on Professional Development Center is working both with the consultations and the teachers of Modern Languages and Professional Communication department SSAU preparing them to become tutors who can give workshops on developing academic literacy and provide consultations individually for those who want their colleagues from other countries appreciate their scientific achievements. All these goals became real due to PhD, Head of the Department Victoria Levchenko. She invited English language specialist Eve Smith from Georgia, USA to raise the teachers' level of professional competence.
        SACC further plans are to become more and more fascinating. Eve Smith accompanied with SACC tutors are currently working on professional development of other tutors from other Russian cities. This program is called «Professional Development for Writing Centers' Tutors in Training». The second half of 2015-2016 academic year will be full of the workshops in the following cities: Kazan (Kazan Federal University), Irkutsk, Ekaterinburg (Ural State Pedagogical University), Smolensk (Smolensk University for Humanities), Tyumen (Tyumen State University), Saint-Petersburg, Tuapse Region in Krasnodar (ICC «Orlyonok»). All these places are planning to open academic consultancy centers.
The university which picked up the torch was Kazan Federal University. German Philology department staff (Head of Dept., PhD, associate prof. D. N. Davletbaeva) have done a lot of activities, such as:
            · Learning the usage and functioning of APA style (American Psychological Association style);
            · Mastering the skills in scientific papers’ critical reading, writing an abstract and thesis statement;
            · Practicing academic writing taking into account the target audience;
            · Striving for professional excellence in conducting individual consultations, workshops and seminars;
            · Dealing with psychological aspects of different audiences.
        Apart from professional development, would-be tutors presented their own ideas of organizing academic consultancy centers in the micro context of their university. Our Kazan colleagues learnt how to make tutors’ job more effective and how to minimize troubles that could occur with different kinds of tutees.
        Such seminars encourage motivation in English teachers to become tutors, perform the information on strategies and future development of academic consultancy centers, spread the experience in conducting seminars and consultations and give an opportunity to learn what SACC has already done.
        According to the participants’ opinions, though the intensive work during the seminars was challenging, but definitely it was fruitful and irreplaceable. The professional ties between colleagues from Kazan and Samara gave an impulse to further work in academic writing sphere. During the trip the memorandum between Kazan Federal University and Samara University was signed. On the basis of an arrangement, in May, 2016 Modern Languages and Professional Communication department staff will arrange a series of online workshops for perfecting skills in academic writing.
        Samara Academic Consultancy Center goes on working on this program in other Russian cities to give an opportunity to open their own centers and to help other teachers to develop professional excellence.
Furthermore, SACC is going to enter European and International associations of Academic Consultancy Centers and form a syndicate with the Russian existing and would-be centers.
